In 1995 I invented the first commercially available webcam software, SNAP-N-SEND. In early 1996 I called Sean Collins, the founder of Surfline.com and an expert oceanographer, to tell him what I created. He was elated. He told me he was going to need to email pictures of the surf outside his office in the building across the street from the Huntington Beach pier to his ISP in Boston.
I met with him to show how my software worked and he immediately placed an order for it. Below is a page from Surfline.com showing that time in history.

That resulted in several contracts for webcam systems from the USPS. Among those contracts were needs for solar power and a small trailer for Santa Monica and for that trailer a telescoping mast.
